Just like the dental surgery, the dental laboratory is a place in which it is essential to follow the procedures for correct disinfection and sterilisation of surfaces, devices and instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The aim is to reduce considerably the risk of\ntransmitting pathogen micro-organisms <\/strong>to healthcare operators, patients,\nvisitors and to objects themselves. Putting into practice correct and strict\nprocedures for disinfection and sterilisation constitutes a clinical excellence\non a par with the quality of care delivered in the manufactured product and\/or\nprosthodontic\/orthodontic device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent and numerous studies have\nshown that surfaces, worktops, devices and\/or dental impressions are important\nmeans of transmission of diseases or infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decontamination and the correct disinfection of all devices that contain\nbiological material<\/strong>, whether incoming or outgoing from the dental surgery\nare of crucial importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below is a guide that highlights\nall the fundamental steps for the correct hygiene protocol for\ndevices\/impressions on the part of both the dental surgery staff and the dental\nlab professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protocol for decontamination of dental impressions and prosthodontic devices in a dental surgery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. Decontaminate\nthe patient\u2019s oral cavity using disinfectant agents and make sure that there is\nno blood on oral surfaces;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Insert the\nsterile impression tray with the impression material which will help record the\npatient\u2019s condition;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Once the\nimpression has been taken, rinse the impression thoroughly to remove any\nresidue and traces of saliva. Next, remove any excess water;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Disinfect the\nimpression using a disinfectant specifically for impression material, dipping\nthe impression in the solution or spraying it directly if using a spray\ndisinfectant.  Follow the chosen disinfectant manufacturer’s instructions\nfor contact time;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Where envisaged\nby the disinfectant, after disinfection rinse thoroughly under running water\n(usually spray disinfectants for impressions do not envisage rinsing after\ndisinfection). Lastly, insert the impressions in a transparent bag suitable for\ntransporting the device.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Protocol for the decontamination of the dental laboratory staff<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    1. Before casting\nthe impression or working on devices that have been in a patient\u2019s mouth, wash\nyour hands thoroughly, disinfect the laboratory worktops and make sure the\ndevice was previously disinfected by the surgery (if in doubt proceed with\ndisinfection);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. After working\non the device or prosthodontic product, it needs to be disinfected and inserted\nin a new bag suitable for its transportation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      It is good practice for the\ndental surgery and the dental laboratory jointly to agree on scrupulous\nprocedures for the disinfection and sterilisation of manufactured products\nand\/or prosthodontic and orthodontic devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We therefore recommend you buy the same line of disinfectant products <\/strong>to\nimplement the correct protocol, in perfect antiseptic consistency among\ncooperating facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
